Engineering Scale Test Facility Completed

07/21/2008

NuVision Engineering has completed the installation of an Engineering Scale Test Facility at its 12,000 sq. ft. industrial facility in Mooresville, NC. The purpose of the facility, funded by EM20, is to support the U.S. Department of Energy’s legacy nuclear waste environmental management mission. The structure has been designed as a demonstration facility for waste retrieval technologies and will also be used for operator training and troubleshooting purposes.

NVE has been conducting EM20-funded tests and demonstrations at the Mooresville facility for more than a decade, with an impeccable safety record. The Engineering Scale Test Facility is the latest progression in NVE’s support to complex-wide technology development and implementation.

The first project to use the facility will be the development and demonstration of an improved articulated sluicing nozzle to improve waste mobilization and waste retrieval operations in large cylindrical tanks with significant obstructions. It is anticipated that the facility will become an extremely useful asset to tank farm and waste treatment plant (WTP) contractors at Savannah River Site (SRS) and Hanford.

The ESTF is a 20' diameter test tank that can be modified to 10', 15' or 20' depth through the addition of flanged collars. The facility has been designed to provide maximum flexibility for varied applications and includes an open top, superstructure for equipment support as well as adjustable height and bottom configuration. It is also equipped with ancillary services such as 480V, 3ph electricity supply, compressed air, water, and low pressure steam. The facility is staffed with NVE technicians supported by an experienced co-located engineering staff capable of providing technical assistance with equipment commissioning, integration and troubleshooting as well as test program development and third-party validation of test results.

Services offered at the facility include simulant preparation and storage, waste disposal, and mock-up assembly and disassembly. The first test program is scheduled to be complete in the first quarter of 2009.
